More Magnetism!

We decided to have a go making compasses.

We magnetised sewing needles, using bar magnets.

We placed the needle into a cork base, or used blu tac to stick it to the top of the cork base.

We gathered our basins of water, and in the went.

The magnetic compasses spun around to face north, as we had hoped!

Some children imaginatively
took their compasses for a swirl through the water!!!

Since we had the water and blu tac to hand, we decided to make some boats, to test floating and sinking! Surprisingly difficult, we took a few attempts to get this right!

We took a very scientific route to success!
We tried using the cork bases- a handy hack!
Here goes!
Success!
A little imaginative cheating!
Some additional support structures were used!
Some added masts from toothpicks and sails of tac, along with some Vikings!

Heave ho!

Some added paper sails to their toothpick masts!
We tried and explored and tried and explored again!
Finally, a sub aquatic scene was added!

We had a ball and learned a lot while exploring magnetism today!

Spud Murphy!

Holster your spud guns!

We read Eoin Colfer’s Legend of Spud Murphy. We made some predictions about what would happen with this librarian on the prowl!

We also devised some spud gun plans!

Magnets!

We had some epic explorations and investigations of our magnet kits, thanks to our supporting schools for their resources too!

Bringing the snake for a walk!
Ta da! Using safety-lock magnets for long skipping ropes!
How many can we attract?!
How many links can our magnets hold?
GIANT MAGNET!!!
Spot the iron filings!!!
Free play with the filings- investigations to come!
Attaching the links!
More iron filing exploration!
Lodestones, some purchased and some found!

The Mural!

Huge and massive thanks to Linda, the lovely artist with whom we worked for our Every Child a Reader programme.

She came back to us this September to create this unique and amazing piece of art.

All little and big hands had a part in its creation.

We created a theme, we explored many drawings, we scaled up and chose colours.

We invited last year’s 6th class back- they were vital to the project- and we painted a masterpiece!

We hope you love it as much as we do!
