Happy Mother’s Day

Juniors made beautiful flower pots after their spring planting lessons!
Seniors planted pots of cress for their Mother’s Day gifts. We used our lollipop sticks from mixing our compost pellets to label our seedlings.
We added layered butterflies to chopsticks and placed them in our pots!
We read a poem called The Kiss, about a memory of a mother’s love. We used it as a stimulus for special messages, and attached them to our little pots or wrote about them in our cards.

The poem recognises the constancy of a mother’s love. It’s always there for us, we are loved unconditionally by our mammies!

A very clever pair created the cuffs for the pots and we attached handles and of course, the beautiful butterflies!

Gorgeous!
Happy Mother’s Day!

Spring!

The juniors worked hard and have beautiful displays to showcase their spring learning.

They were learning all about the life cycle of the frog and all about parts of the plant, as they start their spring planting!

They’ll be planting peas, beans and spuds too!!!

Planting and exploring the ‘Green Wave’ in seniors…

We went to Hoban’s tree to investigate whether or not the sticky buds have burst!

In Errew, we’ve been participating in our own Green Wave research since taking part in the original project as part of our Discover Science awards way back in 2004!!!

We observe the tree, tracking the sticky buds’ progress from tight bud to green leaf!

Some have burst!

It’s early days, but buds have burst and arrival of spring weather is welcome.

We also investigated last year’s conkers!

We’ll go again to see the growth soon!

A quick check on our blackcurrant canes en route back to school, they’re blossoming beautifully.

As we now know that spring proper warms up the soil, we have started planting!

We prepared the compost for our cress seeds, we’ll be gifting these this Sunday!!!

A busy day in the month for us, with more growing to come!

Planting our kale, grown from seeds
Making rows
And rows!
And little holes for our seeds!
Seeds are in!
Labels are in! We’ve planted salads; mizuna and salad bowl, we planted radishes and beetroots, we planted carrots, parsnips and turnips too. We will plant pumpkins soon and expect some will find a good home this summer where they can thrive! We will track their progress just like we did with our spider babies in the past.
Watering everything nicely!
Job done!

Later in the spring we’ll thin our seedlings and hopefully have good luck with the weather to help our little garden thrive.

Italy

We’ve been studying Italy, creating display projects on paper and card. Our other projects are on Google Slides in Google Classroom, so we decided to give the old-fashioned staple a go. Our social engagement was fantastic and we now know a lot about Italy!

We were all included, pro-social in our engagement and valued in our classroom workspace.

Wow! We had to clear three boards to showcase our work!
We supplemented some projects with Lego!
Presenting our work!

St Patrick’s Day

We made badges, and decorated our windows!

Artful badge work- this one is based on the carvings of the Turoe Stone.
A gift!
Some Posca Paintings!
Celtic swirling concentric spirals

We used google classroom to explore some work by Eve McKee, we explored some Celtic and Early Christian designs, linking with our history work of the past. We used the illustrations of Conor McHale and also the National Museum of Ireland, for St Patrick’s badge stimulus material!

Here’s our collection of badges to celebrate Lá Fhéile Padraig!

Happy St Patrick’s Day from the Junior Room!
