More Magnetism!

We decided to have a go making compasses.

We magnetised sewing needles, using bar magnets.

We placed the needle into a cork base, or used blu tac to stick it to the top of the cork base.

We gathered our basins of water, and in the went.

The magnetic compasses spun around to face north, as we had hoped!

Some children imaginatively
took their compasses for a swirl through the water!!!

Since we had the water and blu tac to hand, we decided to make some boats, to test floating and sinking! Surprisingly difficult, we took a few attempts to get this right!

We took a very scientific route to success!
We tried using the cork bases- a handy hack!
Here goes!
Success!
A little imaginative cheating!
Some additional support structures were used!
Some added masts from toothpicks and sails of tac, along with some Vikings!

Heave ho!

Some added paper sails to their toothpick masts!
We tried and explored and tried and explored again!
Finally, a sub aquatic scene was added!

We had a ball and learned a lot while exploring magnetism today!
